Not all caravan insurers offer the same policies and it is not just in price terms that differences occur.

The type of caravan cover you need will obviously be determined by the type of caravan you have.

So, the insurance needed for a tourer differs from that needed for a static or a motorhome, for example.

Youll typically find though, that even within these categories, the actual cover offered may differ significantly.

It may be worth looking at a few examples.

What is (and isnt) covered

Some policies may for example:

  • restrict cover to the UK while others may provide for foreign trips as well with continental cover;
  • provide for unlimited travel (UK or abroad) while others may impose an annual mileage limit;
  • impose a lower age limit for drivers or towers;
  • cover contents on a new for old basis others may offer market value cover.

Reading the policy documents will allow you to see what the insurance for caravans entails.

Terms and conditions

Some providers of insurance for caravans may try to encourage you to take some fairly commonsense steps to help keep your caravan safe. Some may feel strongly enough about preventative measures to make them conditions of their policies.

So you may find that some policies require you to:

  • fit wheel clamps and hitchlocks to your tourer;
  • stow your awning away when you are not around otherwise damage to it may not be covered;
  • drain down water systems if your caravan is not being used, particularly over the winter months.

Different caravan insurers put different emphasis on different elements of risk. The only way to be sure that you understand if a particular policy is appropriate for you may be to read it through carefully.
