Park caravan insurance (sometimes known as park home insurance) is a form of insurance protection aimed at a specific type of caravan/dwelling.

The insurance industry typically recognises a number of different caravan types:

  • park homes (park caravans);
  • static caravans;
  • touring caravans;
  • trailer tents;
  • motorhomes.

In the case of park homes, this category is typically defined partly by its location and partly by the way that the caravan or dwelling is used.

If you have a structure/caravan that resides on a site that has been approved by the local authorities for permanent park home occupation and you occupy your structure/ caravan as your permanent place of residence, then it will typically be defined as a park home.

As such, it will require specific park home (park caravan) insurance.

In another situation, if you have the static caravan located on a site licensed only for temporary caravan usage and you only occupy your caravan for a few weeks per year for holiday purposes, then it will typically require static caravan insurance.

The two forms of cover are not interchangeable and you cannot use static caravan insurance for a caravan/dwelling that you occupy on a permanent basis.

This is not just a discussion around the meaning of words.

Caravan insurance providers typically see the risks for a park home and a static caravan, as being significantly different. For example, the park home may have a higher and more expensive standard of contents and equipment than may be the case typically with a static caravan.

This is why there are specific policies for the two types of occupation and usage.

Park home cover may have its own specific conditions relating to the nature of the site itself. You may find that some policies will not cover dwellings located on a site with a known history of flooding. Other policies may also require that the site be under permanent supervision.

Park caravan insurance may be essential if you are to ensure that your place of domicile is adequately protected both in terms of its structure and your contents.
