Touring caravan contents insurance isnt obligatory (at the time of writing), however, trying to do without it might prove to be a decision that you bitterly regret.
Touring caravan insurance comes in many different shapes and sizes. The policies provided by one insurer may be significantly different to those of another.
It may, for example, be possible to take out cover for the structure of your caravan but not its contents.
What this would mean is that in the event of an accident or other such calamity, any costs relating to the loss or destruction of your caravan contents would need to be met by you.
In terms of touring caravan contents insurance, it might pay to keep in mind that your contents may be at risk from one of several different generic risks:
Of course, only you will know just how valuable or otherwise the contents of your touring caravan actually are. It may be important to guard against the subconscious tendency to under-value them as a whole, to justify to yourself that cover isn’t required!
Contents cover insurance is typically provided on either a new-for-old or market valuation basis. The latter will mean that the insurer, in the event of a claim, will typically only pay out for contents based upon their estimated present-day (and therefore second-hand) value.
You may find that some insurers place a cap on the maximum amount they will pay out in total for a caravan contents claim and possibly also have a maximum for any individual item.
It might be a good idea to check your touring caravan contents quotation carefully, before making a final decision on an insurer, that any such limits are acceptable to you.
